Historical films take audiences into another time and place in the most authentic way and allow them to be immersed in an entirely new world. The costume design on these historical sets takes blood, sweat and tears to make the characters come to life.
The costume designer for The Great Gatsby, Catherine Martin, explained to Fashionista that they use many references from the novel they are adapting into a film to determine the styles of the respective time periods. “And then you go like a detective, and you go to the Met library and you go to FIT and you look in books, and you look online, and you read as much as you possibly can,” Martin said.
While some designers stand by historical accuracy 100 percent, others prefer to use their imaginations. Jacqueline Durran, the costume designer for Anna Karenina, told Fashionista that when you ditch historical accuracy, “you’re left to the sense of style or sense of interpretation and that’s quite liberating.”
