She may have played the Princess of China, but Rihanna is all about being a Japanese Geisha for her new Stance campaign.
The 28-year-old songstress entrusted illustrator Bijou Karman with her vision of showcasing her Stance collection.
Los Angeles-based Karman didn’t disappoint with her breathtaking art, featuring Rihanna in various garbs that pay respect to the culture.
The colors all complement together to show off the Stance socks.
According to W magazine, “Karman pulled the lush color palette of deep plum, mint green, sherbet orange, and sage from the socks themselves, incorporating their floral motifs into kimonos and background details.”
In order to avoid controversy, Karman consulted with Japanese designers on everything, from the shape of the kimono to the design of the shoes.
The 24-year-old illustrator has always had an interest in Harajuku street style, so the campaign came together organically. Designers Rei Kawakubo and Junya Watanabe served as major inspirations.
“I didn’t want to do anything that was culturally insensitive. I wanted to make sure it was true to Japan,” Karman said.
Rihanna has had an overwhelming success with the Fenty x Stance collection in the past, so much that she released a holiday collection last year.
