If we were to count the world’s best innovations, makeup would definitely feature among the top on the list. This is because it helps achieve one of the major needs in a person (read ladies): beauty. With make-up, every lady can look like a princess their normal skins and genes notwithstanding. To some, it is also a way of dealing with all their insecurities. It grants them the confidence to face the world head held high.
Faking a New Look
I mean, what would you as a lady do without makeup? Would you have the guts to face even the world? Yes? Even with a face full of blemishes and thin eyelashes and no eyebrows? What about that shiny face? Well, maybe you would, but make-up remains a divine savior.
Think about it this way: you can get the kind of lashes you want; lips in your preferred color and shape and most importantly a face as flawless as can be. Makeup also allows you adapt the kind of look you want any day. This is why you probably spend a great deal of time in front of the mirror as you fix your face and another lot as you remove it. You gladly go through this routine just to get your face in order.
However, unbeknownst to you, you may be causing more damage to your skin than good. Yes, makeup will grant you that flawless and head turning look but in the long run, it can damage your skin. This is especially so if you fail to properly and diligently carry out the routine.
Some of the adverse effects you may notice include:
1. Skin discoloration
Some products can cause skin darkening. This is especially rampant with the use of poor quality products. When you use poor quality lipstick or lip gloss on your lips, they may get darkened over time. This is why it is advisable to use products that are of good quality and if possible, try and use products that are still fresh i.e. those whose expiry date is not very near. This darkening can happen on your face leaving you with blemishes and dark patches all over.
2. Skin irritation
It is important to use products that are free from harmful components; ones with ingredients you are not allergic to and also ones that are specially made for your type of your skin.
Some products can cause skin irritation depending on their composition. There is always a chance you can be sensitive or allergic to a chemical in makeup. Rashes are a common side effect of eyelash extensions, where your eyelids may react to the type of glue used in the attachment of the lashes, which leads to swelling and redness on the parts around the eyes. Products containing salicylates cause rashes that are painful on top of ugly.
3. Break outs and acne
Making up your face will involve heaping lots of products on your skin. Some of these products –especially the oil based ones- can clog the pores of your skin and make it impossible for the skin to get rid of the dead skin cells. The build-up of the dead skin cells will provide a cushy place for acne causing bacteria to thrive. This will ultimately lead to massive skin break out. You can avert this tragedy by removing your makeup before you sleep, after exercise and through the use of oil-free products.
4. Increase the chances of you getting wrinkles
According to research, the extended and constant use of cosmetic products leads to enlargement of pores. It is this enlargement that leads to the formation of wrinkles. Therefore, as much as you are using makeup to keep looking young, you could be increasing your chances of aging before your time.
5. Weakens the skin
Prolonged use of make-up renders the skin completely dependent on the products. This means that your skin may not be able to withstand environmental factors like the sun that can affect it. You have probably noticed that if you go outdoors without makeup, you get sun burnt. This happens because the products you use have made your skin incapable of filtering the harmful rays of the sun. These products usually do this by reducing the melanin levels in your skin and can even lead to skin cancer.
To most ladies, makeup is the ultimate solution to all their skin problems. This is because with makeup you can conceal all the flaws. This is why you gladly go through the silent torture of applying and removing makeup every day. However, this tedious routine could be harmful to your skin. Makeup can lead to problems like acne, discoloration, irritation and even cancer. Thus daily makeup routine is indeed harmful to your health. Why go through all that trouble and damage your skin?
